Christmas will come early for Dolly Parton fans with the arrival of A Holly Dolly Christmas, the legendary songstress’ first holiday album in 30 years.
A Holly Dolly Christmas is the 47th solo studio album by the American singer-songwriter. Released on October 2, 2020, by Dolly’s Butterfly Records in partnership with 12Tone Music Group.
This project is also Dolly’s third Christmas album, following 1984’s Once Upon a Christmas with Kenny Rogers and 1990’s Home for Christmas. The album features guest appearances from Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, Michael Bublé, Billy Ray Cyrus, Willie Nelson, Randy (Dolly’s brother) and was produced by Kent Wells.
On this new album, Dolly did a cover of Mariah Carey’s modern holiday classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
“I thought, ‘What other songs are really hot?’ And I thought, ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’ Jimmy Fallon, a couple of years ago, I was on his show around Christmas and he asked me to sing that and I didn’t know it and I felt so bad. So I went and learned it and I was just going to put it on my album and then I went, ‘I’ll ask Jimmy Fallon to sing it with me!’ And he said, yes. So I’m really excited about that.”
Most of Dolly’s duet partners recorded their parts individually, while she finished the project with Wells due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the A Holly Dolly Christmas, Dolly has plenty of other music-themed projects coming this fall. November 17 is the release date of Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, a deluxe coffee table book looking at her career and life through 175 of her songs.
Also Christmas on the Square a musical movie is set to be released on November 22nd.
“I figured since everybody probably wouldn’t get to celebrate Christmas as usual this year, I wanted to be creative instead of sitting around at the house this summer,” Parton said in a statement.
“So I put on my mask, gloves and practiced social distancing, as well as all of the wonderful musicians and singers, and we proceeded to put together what I think is some of the best work that I’ve ever done.”
