Taylor Swift is heading to China in November, where she’s billed to perform at The Alibaba Group’s annual Singles’ Day shopping Festival.
Singles’ Day began as the Chinese variant of Valentine’s Day. Its usually celebrated on November 11th (11/11). One of the reasons being the uniqueness of the date’s numbers.
As part of Alibaba’s countdown to its Singles’ Day sale; the world’s largest online shopping event. The fiesta is designed to attract Shoppers and entertain them till midnight when the sales and discounted shopping officially begins.
Over 200,000 brands are estimated to participate in this year’s edition with an expected one million new products flooding the market.
“You Need to Calm Down” as Taylor rightly sang, because Alibaba expects a whooping 500 million users to participate within this 24 hour shopping window. A massive 100 million users more than last year’s number.
In recent years, the shopping extravaganza has generated more revenue than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Last year’s event, resulted in $30.8 billion in sales over all of Alibaba’s platforms in just 24 hours. Dwarfing Amazon’s Prime Day sales in less than 10 minutes .
Taylor Swift will perform at the gala in Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz Arena on Nov. 10. Where she would be joined by a line up of top international and local celebrities including: Lay Zhang (vocalist of the South Korean boy band EXO), G.E.M, Hua Chenyu, Kana Hanazawa, Ju Jingyi, Li Ronghao, Luo Yunxi, Jackson Yee and Jason Zhang.
At the moment, Swift is the only major American artist mentioned in Alibaba’s press release for the event. A special performance could also be delivered by Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba group.

Taylor Swift, who already has a huge fan base in China and her fondness for ‘Love’ and ‘Heartbreak’ songs makes just the perfect artiste for the gala. Her latest “Lover” album sold a million copies in China in its first week of release. Making it the most popular international full-length album in the country this year.
Alibaba’s 11/11 Countdown Gala has over the years become a big red carpet event. With the event playing host to A-List celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams, Nicole Kidman, Kobe Bryant, David Beckham, Daniel Craig, Kevin Spacey and others.
